Lumbago, Hexen schuss, witch stab are all names for low back pain from which many people around the world suffer from.
Our spine is consisted with 33 vertebrae (12 thoracic, 7 cervical, 5 sacrum, 5 lumbar and 4 coccyx) which all of them are linked to most of the nerves, muscles, ligaments, and blood vessels in the body, keeping it together. The spinal cord which goes through the spinal canal along with the nerve roots of the legs and arms enable the upright posture of the body.
The spine performs many functions in the body and is more susceptible to damage as a result of constant mechanical action of the load (strain, bending, shear, pressure, twisting).
Each part of the spine is accountable for the various body motions, and that is why we have high mobility of the neck, and low mobility of the breast area. However, this transition from one to another part of the spine can lead to degenerative changes, thus causing intense pain.
Persons most prone to low back pain are the ones with hard physical or sitting jobs, then patients with congenital spine anomalies or spine injuries, patients struggling with osteoporosis and older men undergoing the degenerative process.
Comfrey is an herb which is very beneficial for persons suffering from low back pain issues and many studies have already confirmed this. This herb looks like big beet root with hairy leaves and can be found on wet fields, meadows, and ditches near the water.
It is a traditional herb used since forever due to its properties for soothing pain. If it is applied in a form of gel, it can alleviate pain resulting from joint dislocation in the knee and osteoarthritis.
The German Sports University carried out a study regarding this issue which included 120 people with lower and upper back pain and it was confirmed the ability of comfrey to soothe pain.
Participants with back pain used an ointment of comfrey root extract for 5 consecutive days, and all of them confirmed a substantial relief in the intensity of the pain.
However, try not to use it in a form of capsules and supplements because it can lead to liver damage.
Above all, you need to be physically active if you struggle with back pain. You can use some stretching exercises like the following one which we shall present to you as it offers quick relief:
Supine Hamstring Stretch
Go to a lying position, and then place a strap or rolled-up towel around the ball of the foot with your right knee bent into the chest. Next, straighten the leg toward the ceiling, and then press out through both heels.
If by any chance you feel the lower back strained, then bend the left knee and put the foot on the floor. Stay in this position for 3 to 5 minutes and do a repetition with the left leg.
You need to perform this exercise daily in order to gain all its benefits.
